Closer to reality: Mission Mangal or Space MOMs?

News and content surrounding ISRO and their initiatives seem to be the flavour of the season and why not? Chandrayaan 2 is hitting headlines for the right reasons and storytellers are utilising the opportunity to come up with content that tells the backstories of several unsung heroes behind the initiatives.

Mission Mangal is among the earliest of films to release later this year, focusing on India's 2014 Mars Orbiter Mission a.k.a Mangalyaan. Featuring an ensemble star cast comprising Akshay Kumar, Vidya Balan, Taapsee Pannu, Kirti Kulhari, Nithya Menen, Sonakshi Sinha and Sharman Joshi in the lead roles, one couldn't have asked for a better time than August 15 for the film to hit theatres.

However, that's not the only content surrounding the Mars Orbiter Mission. Though on a lesser scale, AltBalaji is coming with their take on the historic achievement for ISRO, telling the story of normal, middle-class working moms who also happen to be rocket scientists. Space MOMs will tell how the women behind this mission balanced their personal and professional lives in connection with the mission. 'Not all heroes wear capes, some heroes wear saris' says its ambitious tagline.

Mission Mangal isn't without its controversies, especially with several science researchers alleging the misrepresentation of the initiative and its oversimplification in the recently released promos. Seems like certain fictional liberties were unavoidable while catering a film to the fan-base of a huge star like Akshay Kumar. However, not everyone feels the same about it.

Meanwhile, will the makers of Space MOMs take a cue from this and be wary of the fictional liberties they take? Which of the two attempts may be closer to reality? While Space MOMs is at an obvious advantage with the liberty of a realistic narrative, Mission Mangal has the reach and crowd-pulling stars to benefit its cause (though reality/ true representation may still be an issue). Let's wait and watch!
