Whatever Anurag Kashyap touches for Netflix India turns to gold, and that’s the kind of moolah we are expecting from his latest film for the streaming platform. On 21st May 2020, Kashyap unveiled the trailer for his upcoming film ‘Choked’ starring Saiyami Kher and Roshan Mathew from his official twitter handle.
Choked is about a hapless bank cashier who finds a source of unlimited money in her own kitchen. However, things take a turn for the worse (or perhaps, entertaining) when Prime Minister Modi unexpectedly announces the demonetisation of Rs. 500 and Rs. 1000 notes, which has her in a fix. Amidst all of this, it seems that all the people don’t have a clue of what’s going on in her mind - where did she get all this money from in the first place, and why is she so perturbed about the government’s decision?
The role of Sarita Pillai, the cashier, is being essayed by Saiyami Kher who made her Hindi feature film debut in Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra’s film Mirzya. Her wastrel husband will be played by Roshan Mathew. While this is the first time Saiyami and Roshan are working with Netflix, this is Kashyap’s second collaboration with the streaming platform just this year. He has directed a short each in Lust Stories and Ghost Stories, as well as the hit series Sacred Games.
Choked will be a twisted look at how the middle class was affected by the ruling government’s announcement, and is perhaps one of the first of its kind movies to deal with this subject after the 2016 Indian banknote demonetisation. The film also features Amruta Subhash and Rajshri Deshpande in supporting roles, and a score composed by Karsh Kale.
Choked drops on Netflix on June 5. The trailer is already receiving rave feedback on Twitter. Watch it here.
