Shoojit Sircar’s upcoming dramedy Gulabo Sitabo has already become a trendsetter by becoming one of the first Bollywood films of this scale to get a digital release via Amazon Prime Video in wake of the coronavirus pandemic. And from the looks of the trailer, the film will surely be a trendsetter in other ways as well.
In just a few minutes, we are introduced to the idiosyncratic and quirky characters of an old and tattered mansion in Lucknow, but we are most concerned with Baankey (Ayushmann Khurrana), a young tenant and his constant tussle with his uncaring landlord, Mirza (Amitabh Bachchan). When Baankey refuses to leave the premises or to an increase in rent, Mirza has to take matters in his own hands and possibly sell the mansion… the one thing that he has given his heart and soul to. What begins is a game of one-upmanship between the two to retain their place in the ‘haveli,’ but will they have to come together to save the house from the local authorities? We will find out on June 12.
This is the first time that megastar Amitabh Bachchan will be sharing screen space with young superstar Ayushmann Khurrana. However, it neither’s the first film with Shoojit Sircar. Khurrana made his feature film debut with the National Award-winning Vicky Donor, while Bachchan played a pivotal role in Piku and also Pink, which Sircar produced.
The release of the trailer was also introduced in a unique style yesterday with the director and his two actors trying to connect via video call. But just like the constant ‘nok-jhok’ between their characters, Khurrana and Bachchan were unable to connect with each other, and then indulged in some banter when they finally did.
Gulabo Sitabo is written by Juhi Chaturvedi and also stars Vijay Raaz in a supporting role. It will be available for digital streaming on Amazon Prime Video on June 12, 2020.
